Assignment Two:
Assignment Two was designed to put the communication techniques learned in the previous assignment into practice, and this was my first venture into producing a site survey, interpreting a client brief and creating a concept board for a given interior design project. Assignment Three builds on this information, client feedback and research in order to put together a successful drawing package for the project.
The Assignment Two brief was to create a new living room scheme using the Contemporary design style, which must include new flooring, wall coverings and window treatments. I employed a friend or family member as the hypothetical client, and used an existing living room space in order to develop the interior scheme for this project, earning a Merit as a resulting grade.
A selection of the completed work for this assignment is shown on the project sheets below:
Cover page using Rhidesign Interiors’ original branding and logo. The porcelain dog design represents my favourite ornament and love of dogs.
I began the site survey by sketching a floorplan (not to scale) and including all of the dimensional measurements. I created much of this project by hand.
A sketch of the north wall elevation of the living room to be redesigned; I used a large A3 sketchbook in order to create many of the pages for this project.
An elevation sketch for the east wall of the living room to be redesigned; this includes the radiator, window and socket dimensions and positions.
Elevation sketch for the south wall of the living room redesign, including positions and dimensional information for sockets and skirting boards.
Elevation sketch for the living room west wall, which includes dimensional and positional information for internal windows and doors, as well as light switches.
I began the photographic site survey in my A3 sketchbook with photos of the exterior of the building and a rough map of the house’s location.
Page from the photographic survey showing front access and entrance points of the house (important information for trades and any furniture deliveries)
Page from the photographic survey showing trade and delivery access points at the rear of the house, using manually printed photos and handwritten notes.
Further photos of the rear access points and security features of the house, as well as access points to the living room from the rest of the house.
Page from the photographic survey showing photos of the north and east elevations of the living room to be redesigned, complete with handwritten notes.
Page from the photographic survey showing the south and west elevations of the living room to be redesigned, complete with handwritten notes.
Page from the photographic survey showing each corner of the living room and the different viewpoints these provide, complete with handwritten notes.
Page from the photographic site survey showing the positions and condition of the current light switches and electrical sockets in the living room.
Page from the photographic site survey showing further decor details and problem features that would need to be removed as part of the redesign.
Page from the photographic site survey showing further problem room features which would need to be removed as part of the living room redesign.
I produced a very detailed client brief for this project based on an initial consultation with my hypothetical client, using handwritten notes and reference images.
The second page of the thorough client brief including plenty of handwritten notes and a mix of found and first hand photography from the client’s skiing trips.
The client wanted a cosy living room based on Norwegian cabin culture, so plenty of personal photos were included as part of the research.
A further page from the highly detailed client brief including more first hand photography of cosy cabins nestled into mountain ranges...and a beverage!
The final page of the client brief write-up, which gives a clear indication for the direction of the project and the living room redesign and interior scheme.
A diagram derived from the client brief showing the client’s likes and dislikes in terms of design styles, aesthetics, materials, colours and finishes etc.
The initial concept board made in response to the client brief. This is the first one I had ever made and was developed further as a result of feedback.
Following feedback I developed the concept board design, which is closer to what the client wanted. This is developed even further in Assignment Three.
